Ethiopia s anti-dumping on energy storage

Ethiopia's energy strategy is strongly anchored in hydropower, but long-term resilience depends on accelerating the development of solar and wind energy. To avoid overreliance on a single source, the government must fast-track grid integration and enhances private sector participation through Independent Power Producer (IPP) schemes.

Ethiopia stands at a critical juncture in its energy journey. The country has ambitious plans to harness its vast renewable energy potential, reform its power sector, and achieve universal electricity access. While these goals offer tremendous opportunities, they also present significant challenges.

Second, since 2013, the power sector reform distributes regulatory, generation, and distribution mandates among the Ethiopian Energy Authority, Ethiopian Electric Power, and Ethiopian Electric Utility, respectively.

To mitigate this, Ethiopia is investing in solar and wind energy. The country possesses some of Africa's most promising renewable resources—a 108 km² solar park alone could meet the current annual electricity demand of 18 TWh. Yet, these resources remain significantly underutilized.

Ethiopia is endowed with a variety of renewable energy resources. This enormous potential however remains largely unexploited. Energy poverty, inefficiency, and insecurity are still major challenges. Energy transition could support almost all SDGs in the country.

The review shows that energy supply and consumption in Ethiopia are dominated by bioenergy (88%) and by households (88%), respectively. Electricity barely accounts for 3% of the total energy supply although its generation has increased by more than four times between 2004/05 and 2018/19.
