(Image source: CATL) CATL's new Tener Stack energy storage system breakthrough can supply electricity from renewables to the average home for up to six years, in the first five of which it will undergo zero capacity degradation. It can also charge 150 electric vehicles before its batteries run out.
With a single unit storing 9MWh—enough to power 150 EVs or sustain a German household for six years—the system drastically reduces land use. Developers deploying 800MWh storage can cut container numbers by one-third and boost land efficiency by 40%, lowering total construction costs by up to 20%.
This system, designed as a 2-split containerized BESS solution, can be stacked to deliver a cumulative energy storage capacity of up to 9 MWh, according to Spinnen. A company statement on its official website highlights that the system is equipped with CATL's high-energy-density cells featuring up to 5 years of zero degradation.
At an 800 MWh site, for example, switching from a 6 MWh to a 9 MWh system would reduce the number of containers from 34 to 23, the number of PCS from 17 to 12, and the land area needed from 4653 m2 to 2753 m2. CATL calculates that this would save up to 20% on the initial project investment.
To put the 9 MWh energy storage capacity in perspective, the 20-foot container is capable of powering the average single family home for up to six years, for five of which CATL guarantees that no capacity degradation will occur in the system's cells. It can charge up to 150 EVs with the current average battery size of electric cars, too.
