A novel hybrid multilevel inverter based on a low-frequency three-level neutral-point-clamped converter and high-frequency cascaded H-bridge converters for high-voltage direct current transmission is presented.
As shown, the calculated power losses are close to the measured active power transferred by the H2-bridge in the experiment. The proposed hybrid voltage source inverter can reduce the number of active devices and DC capacitors, further reduce the volume, simplify the structure, and enable the application of a simple control strategy.
The H1-bridge is used to offset the fifth and seventh harmonics in the phase voltage of the 3L-NPC inverter and sustain the voltage balance of its own DC capacitor by absorbing a little active power from the AC side. A DC-capacitor voltage closed-loop is built for each phase leg.
