In the 10 October issue of Nature Chemistry, for example, researchers led by Leroy Cronin, a chemist at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom, reported a polyoxometalate flow battery that stores up to 40 times as much charge as vanadium cells of the same volume.
In the 1980s, the University of New South Wales in Australia started to develop vanadium flow batteries (VFBs). Soon after, Zn-based RFBs were widely reported to be in use due to the high adaptability of Zn-metal anodes to aqueous systems, with Zn/Br2 systems being among the first to be reported.
As an important branch of RFBs, all-vanadium RFBs (VRFBs) have become the most commercialized and technologically mature batteries among current RFBs due to their intrinsic safety, no pollution, high energy efficiency, excellent charge and discharge performance, long cycle life, and excellent capacity-power decoupling .
Li-Ion Batteries (LIBs) and Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs) are popular battery system in electrical energy storage technology. Currently, LIBs have dominated the energy storage market being power sources for portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and even for small capacity grid systems (8.8 GWh) .
Because vanadium electrolyte doesn't degrade, it is an appropriate commodity for leasing. The customer then has an operating expense rather than a capital expense. This also provides comfort to the customer as at the end of the battery's life the electrolyte belongs to someone else who will then be responsible for retrieving and repurposing it.
