The 130MWh Electric Thermal Energy Storage (ETES) demonstration project, commissioned in Hamburg-Altenwerder, Germany, in June 2019, is the precursor of future energy storage solutions with gigawatt-scale charging and discharging capacities. What is BESS? Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are technologies that store electrical energy in batteries, to be released later as required. These systems play an important role in energy transition and are often used to support the integration of renewable energies such as solar and wind power.

The Electric Thermal Energy Storage system can store up to 130MWh of thermal energy for a week, which can be converted back into electrical energy using a 1.4MW steam turbine generator that can produce electricity for up to 24 hours.

The Hamburg ETES demonstration facility is designed to draw surplus electricity from the grid, store it in the form of thermal energy, and utilise the same to produce electricity, when it is most needed. The facility is capable of powering 1,500 German households a day.
