Barbados outdoor power supply recommended cost-effective

Barbados, a small Caribbean island nation located in the easternmost part of the Lesser Antilles, has made great strides in improving its electricity supply network in recent years. The country has significantly reduced its reliance on imported fossil fuels and increased its renewable energy capacity.

While power outages and voltage fluctuations still occur, Barbados now has one of the region's most reliable and sustainable electricity supply networks. Currently, the Barbados Light & Power Company (BLPC) is responsible for providing electricity to the island, and most of its power comes from imported fossil fuels.

The high cost of imported fuels and the limited availability of domestic energy resources mean that electricity prices in Barbados are relatively high compared to other countries in the region. This can be a burden for low-income households and businesses and may limit the uptake of renewable energy technologies.

The SEFB has successfully attracted investment in renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind power installations. As of 2021, Barbados has installed over 30 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity, which is equivalent to approximately 11% of the country's total electricity demand.
