Energy storage systems are essential to the operation of electrical energy systems. They ensure continuity of energy supply and improve the reliability of the system by providing excellent energy management techniques. The potential applications of energy storage systems include utility, commercial and industrial, off-grid and micro-grid systems.
DC connection The majority of energy storage systems are based on DC systems (e.g., batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells). For this reason, connecting in parallel at DC level more storage technologies allows to save an AC/DC conversion stage, and thus improve the system efficiency and reduce costs.
The sizing and placement of energy storage systems (ESS) are critical factors in improving grid stability and power system performance. Numerous scholarly articles highlight the importance of the ideal ESS placement and sizing for various power grid applications, such as microgrids, distribution networks, generating, and transmission [167, 168].
